Quick question…

Are you:

i) A dentist? Please keep reading to find out how you can easily take on an amazing trainee dental nurse!

Or…

ii) Interested in a rewarding career in dental nursing? Please keep reading!

Get your CV in order

If one of your new year’s resolutions was to give your career a boost, then you’ve probably spent the past month searching and applying for new jobs. While this is exciting to start with, if you’re not getting the response you’d hoped for it can start to feel a little disheartening.

The problem could simply be your CV, and the good news is that this can be a pretty easy fix! The job market can be competitive, and you never know how many others might apply for the same role, so every time you send off your CV it has to stand out on your behalf.

Here at the Lotus Dental School, we always suggest tailoring your CV to the role you’re applying for. Read the description to work out exactly what the employer is looking for, and then highlight any skills or experience you have that are particularly relevant. Do this for each role you apply for, they’ll all be slightly different so be sure to tweak accordingly.

How long is your CV? Although there is no set rule on length, some say that two sides of A4 is optimum because employers don’t have the time to read through reams and reams for each applicant. Keep it short, sweet and to the point.

Last but not least, make sure it’s up to date! This might sound obvious, but many people forget to include their most recent employment or latest skills on their CV. Don’t just dig out your old one and send it off, give it some love, attention, and a dash of sparkle!

If you find you’re reaching interview stage and not getting any further, then the great news is that your CV is probably on point! What you need is some top interview tips, so keep your eyes peeled for the next newsletter…

Make better use of your time

We’re all time poor these days, aren’t we. How often do you catch yourself thinking or saying ‘I just don’t have the time to do that/meet up with her/start that task’? We’re all guilty of it, but are we really as busy as we think we are, or are we using our time inefficiently?

How much of your day is spent looking at social media sites? If you timed it, you’d probably be surprised. The same goes for internet shopping, watching television, and other menial things like ironing the bed sheets (who even does that?). While it doesn’t seem like much while you’re doing it, all of this time, when accrued, could be used for things that could enrich your life even more.

We’re not saying don’t go on Facebook – it’s a great way to keep up to date with loved ones – perhaps just restrict yourself to an hour during the course of the day, and see how much more you get done, at work, on your lunch break, and in the evenings.

All of this extra time could be used to read more books, take up a new hobby, go to the gym, phone or visit a friend, start your own blog… the list is endless! Put down the iron and go out and enjoy your life, it’s too short to worry about wrinkled bed sheets!

What’s happening in our world?
Mouth Cancer Action Month

November is officially Mouth Cancer Action Month, a campaign by the Oral Health Foundation that aims to raise awareness of this devastating disease.

From 1-30 November, dental practices are encouraged to get involved by educating patients on the signs and symptoms to be aware of; and we are perfectly placed within our profession to be able to do this.

Practices who register will receive posters that can be displayed in the patient waiting areas, along with other resources like leaflets and self-examination check lists that can be purchased from the campaign’s online store, here.

As a dental nurse you can play a huge part in oral health education, as patients will often feel able to approach you with their questions, so use Mouth Cancer Action Month as a means of raising awareness and potentially saving more lives!

Kelly’s top tips…
How to create a CV that employers can’t ignore!

Finding that dream role is thrilling but once your application is in, there’s that nail biting period of waiting to hear back. So how can you maximise your chances of securing that perfect job? Well, the first place to start is by creating a knock out CV that potential employers just can’t ignore.

Here are Kelly’s top tips to creating a super CV that will make you stand out from the crowd…

• Do your research – Make the most of the skills that are relevant to your potential new employer, if they do they do lots of community work then shout about any voluntary experience you have. If they are a high-end private practice then highlight any employment you have had in a similar luxury setting. The trick is to tailor your CV to both the role and the employer.

• Short and sweet – Keep it to two pages, and that’s the maximum! Employers may receive lots of applications and they simply don’t have time to read tons of information, so keep your CV punchy and to the point. Make the most of any experience relevant to the role you’re applying for, and keep everything else to a minimum.

• Get creative – An attractively designed CV is going to stand out from the crowd. It can be worthwhile investing in a good template from somewhere like Adobe Stock Templates or similar. When designing your CV, don’t cram in lots of text, as this can be hard to read, instead use white space and bullet points to attract attention.

• The personal touch – Including a photograph will immediately give your application a more personable feel, just make sure it’s a professional headshot and not your favourite selfie!

• Check it – Then check it again, and get someone else to read over it, too. Poor spelling and grammar can be a real turn off for potential employers, so take the time to ensure that yours is spot on.

What’s happening in our world?
Illegal tooth whitening is still rife

A poll carried out by the Oral Health Foundation has revealed that thousands of Brits have admitted to having their teeth whitened by illegal, untrained providers.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation said: ‘When done incorrectly, tooth whitening can lead to severe chemical burns and the possibility of permanent scarring, tooth loss and in extreme cases affect the ability to eat and even breath.’

Since 2011, tooth whitening has been considered the practice of dentistry, deeming it illegal for anyone other than a qualified, sufficiently trained, and registered dental professional to carry it out.

Although dental nurses are not allowed to administer tooth whitening treatment, but they can assist in the creation of dental trays for home whitening and also spread the message and build awareness among the public about who they should turn to for professional treatment.

Kelly’s top tips…

How to get a trainee dental nursing job

Becoming a dental nurse will set you on the path of a wonderful career with lots of opportunities to progress within your role, work at different practices, and give something back to your community. It’s a fabulous journey, and one that I have enjoyed for many reasons (we’ll talk about those in a later newsletter)!

Once you have taken the decision to become a dental nurse, how on earth do you go about getting a job? Well, first things first you need to get the right training firmly under your belt. Enrol yourself on a NEBDN Diploma in Dental Nursing course with an approved provider. If you’re not sure whether they are legitimate or not, simply check to see if they are listed here: http://nebdn.org/where-can-i-study. If not, I suggest very swiftly averting your attentions to a provider who is on that list!

My top tip is to be very wary of any college that promises you a job at the end of your training, this is false advertising and I often find that these establishments are simply after your money; the only person who can guarantee you a job is a dental practice owner. At Lotus Dental Education, we have a good network of dental practices that advertise vacancies exclusively for our students, so although we cannot guarantee you a job, we do promise to bring lots of opportunities your way. However, the rest is down to you…

Here’s what you need to have in place

Update your CV! As obvious as this sounds, many people forget to do this and then panic and rush it to apply for a job. Spend some quality time on this, it’s the first thing a potential new employer is going to see about you and it’s vital to make a great first impression, even on paper. That said, I think it’s a nice touch to include a nice, smiling photo of yourself to your CV. This makes you look personable and approachable, which are key attributes for your new role working with the public.

It is also very important to have your Hepatitis B vaccination in hand because this is a requirement before you can start working as a dental nurse.

How to make a millions working as a Dental Nurse

How to make a millions working as a Dental Nurse

This looks like the kind of idiotic post you see all over the internet, the link bate designed to hook you in.  “How to get perfect abs in 5 minutes a day”  “how to make a million dollars from home” etc etc.  Stick with me though, it is possible and the title is there to make a point.

Think about a job that no matter how good you get at it, you’ll only make minimum wage.  Let’s take the job of the supermarket trolley pusher.  It doesn’t matter how good you get at pushing trolleys, you’ll never make your millions.

Here is why:

  1. Do you need any skills or experience to get this job?:  No
  2. Who can do this job: Anyone
  3. Is there any career progression: No

As a general rule, the more barriers to entry there are, i.e the more requirements to get a job, the more likely you are to get paid well.

Let’s look at that same set of questions for Dental Nursing

  1. Do you need any skills or experience to get this job?:  Yes, you must be on a recognised course.
  2. Who can do this job: Only those who have studied to be a Dental Nurse.
  3. Is there any career progression: Yes.

Okay, so that gets us some skills, not everyone can do this job, and therefore employers have to pay more money to someone with this skill set.  It’s still not going to make you millions though, but I’ll get to that.

The first stage on the road to earning more money and generating a successful career is gaining skills.  These skills differentiate you from every other job seeker out there.  At lotus we run a year long course and at the end of it you’ll be a fully qualified dental nurse, and since you’ll be working alongside taking the course, you’ll also have experience.

Hang on, you might be thinking, we started out talking about making a million and now we are talking about spending out, paying to join a course, we are going backwards!

The thing is, it is an investment, and investment in you and your skill set.

There are lots of things you could buy instead with this money: the latest iphone, a new handbag, a used car (not a very good one, the course is quite cheap).

However, the problem with all of these items is that they are declining assets.  Each year the item will be worth less than the last.  In five or six years time the iphone will be worth zero, the bag might still be worth a few quid if you treated it well, and the car will certainly worth nothing.

When you spend out on yourself, on your education, that asset grows. Let’s stay you start out as a dental nurse trainee and earn 20k each year whilst studying.  By the time you have finished the course you have one year’s experience and a qualification and so your salary increases to 25k and a year after that with 2 years experience you make 30k.

After two years of working in a specific industry like Dentistry you’ll have learnt a lot.  So where next?  You could invest more in your career and do a course in hygiene and become a dental hygienist. The business side of dentistry might interest you and you could go on to manage practices, eventually you could run your own dental business.

If you think there is no money in dentistry, take a look down Harley Street.

Realistically, making a successful career for yourself is about gaining skills and about being respected for doing something that you are good at.  Money does come with that, but it’s just a bi-product.  If you are great at doing something, you’ll enjoy it, and people will pay extra to get someone who good at what they do.

If this sounds like nonsense, I urge you take a look the testimonial videos.  These people are all in the early stages of their career and already the changes are starting to happen.
